Getting your first massage can feel intimidating, but with the proper preparation, you'll transform from feeling anxious to blissfully relaxed!

Do an online search, and you will find dozens, if not hundreds, of articles about preparing for your first massage. Having been a massage therapist for over 30 years, I can honestly say the majority of these articles are lengthy, offer way too much information, and at their worst, may even contribute to any anxiety you are already feeling. Yikes!

Preparing for your first massage is a breeze! You don't need to worry about a laundry list of preparations. Do you really need to be concerned about what you wear to your session, when and what you eat before your appointment, whether you should exercise before your massage, and if so, how long before the session, whether you should take a bath or a shower with hot or cold water, use Epsom salts or magnesium, stretch before the session, and on and on and on? You get the picture. It's simpler than you think!

So, let's take the easy way! Here's everything you need to know to make your first massage a truly enjoyable experience!

Understanding What to Expect

First-time massage clients often worry about the unknown. Remember that massage therapists are professional healthcare practitioners who prioritize your comfort and well-being. They've seen countless clients and are trained to create a safe, respectful environment. A good therapist will guide you through every step of the process, from undressing (or not) to communicating during the session to getting off the table at the end of the massage.

Pre-Massage Preparation Tips

1. Hydrate Well: Drink plenty of water before and after your massage. Hydration helps your muscles respond better to treatment and supports toxin removal.

2. Communicate Openly: Before your session, the therapist will conduct an intake interview to discuss any problem areas or specific needs and what you hope to accomplish during the session. Be sure to mention any health concerns, injuries, or particular areas of tension. Don't hesitate to provide feedback about pressure or comfort during the massage.

3. Dress Comfortably: Wear loose, easy-to-remove clothing. You'll be draped with a sheet during the massage, ensuring your privacy.
